An overview of the Journey so far of the KMRt Victoria

2008 so far

To date in 2008 we have had some great presentations as well as already activity by the  Common Interest Workgroups who have been setting their direction for the year.  By following this link you will be able to get an idea of the type of activities that the community is working on; http://www.sirfrt.com.au/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

2006/2007 Changing Workforce
This key area has been a challenge for many of our member organisations from so many perspectives, it was identified early in the journey but is still an area that we are actively working on in the Common Interest Workgroup.

This area of activity covers issues such as;
* ageing workforce
* identification and retention of relevant organisational memory,
* Baby Boomer Gen X & Gen Y communication and collaboration as well as attraction and retention,
* mobility in the workforce,
* turnover,
* skills shortages
are all issues that have been faced or are being faced by all organisations today.

As a community we have been talking to member organisations as well as other companies to create our own data base of case studies, tools, processes and learnings on this issue. Feel free to view the high level Matrix;

In the developement of this we have had great presentations and added case studies from organisations like;

  • CSIRO on the development of their allumni network and what is best practice globally
  • Woodside in profile regarding their strategy to change to a knowledge sharing culture to deal with demographic and skill shortage issues
  • Medibank on how they addressed performance and turnover challenges in call centres
  • Dept of Education on Exit Survey processes and learnings
  • ABS on Workforce Shaping to address demographic changes
  • Australia Post on their OD cultural change approach

In March 2007 - at the Zoo we undertook activities to make sense of this complex area of the Changing Workforce.  We had Bernard Salt, a demographer, futurist and partner from KPMG and Damien Woods, also a demographer and expert on ageing workforce from Swinburn's Business Work & Ageing - Ernst and Young.  Both of these presenters were able to share with us what we are currently experiencing in society and the work places and why that is happening.  They also spent time with us on what are the changes that we will be experiencing into the next 20 - 40 years for both society and organisations.  By understanding what we are to expect it gave us a clear idea on identifying priorities for setting Common Interest Workgroups to enable the community to research and address these issues during 2007.

Stakeholder Engagement

The objective set by the Roundtable community was to develop case studies that met a certain criteria for sharing across the group.  They were developed collaboratively in our on line environment, this enabled us to tease out the content linking it to relevant supporting documents and websites where appropriate, these case studies are dynamic documents that are able to be updated and have questions asked regarding areas of interest at any time

 Social Software/virtual collaboration

We conducted a Common Interest Workgroup in Partnership with RMIT on tools that can be used within organisations to enhance collaboration across geographical and organisational boundaries.

Not only did we learn about the potential for this, especially the free stuff, but we also established our very own on KMRt line collaboration space, feel free to visit the overview of the KMRt on line via this link.

The members have unrestricted access to the shared meeting notes, case studies, tools and our growing library of articles and pod casts stored here, these have already been proven as practical and user friendly. They are taking advantage of these tested methodologies eg; Pacific Brands have taken the Knowledge Continuity tool kit that was developed in a large "Service" corp and adapted it for application across their busines within a Manufacturing environment.

In 2006 Presentations by members included,

  • ANZ on their Intranet and online collaboration,
  • Fosters Group on their KM Strategy development and rollout,
  • BP on the Communities of Practice the what and how,
  • Telstra on their future technlolgy direction as well as knowledge identification and mapping,
  • Tenix Defence on Ageing workforce retention of organisational memory,
  • Red Cross Blood Service on value network mapping,
  • Telstra on knowledge transfer during mergers and aquisitions
